All the Main Characters in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
Here is a quick summary of all the details we know about the main characters of Frieren:
Frieren
Debut: Anime Episode 1, Manga Chapter 1 Age: Over 1000 years old Race: Elf Class: Mage Rank: Great Mage
As the title of the series hints at, Frieren is the main character of the show. Frieren is an elf, a race blessed with an almost eternal lifespan. Frieren becomes a powerful mage by mastering the magical abilities, having lived for over a thousand years now. Years ago, Frieren was selected as the Mage for the Hero Party, who were on a mission to defeat the Demon King. Frieren perceives time and emotions differently from a regular human due to the elf’s near immortality. Following the death of her party’s hero, Himmel, she forms her own party to travel to Aureole, the Land Where Souls Rest. Having been unable to come to terms with her feelings previously, Frieren hopes to talk to Himmel once again here.
Fern
Debut: Anime Episode 1, Manga Chapter 2 Age: 19-20 Race: Human Class: Mage Rank: First-Class
Having lost her parents in a war at a young age (9 years old), Fern was an orphan until she met Heiter. The priest raised her with love and care, and he asked Frieren to take care of her when he was on his deathbed. Thus, Fern becomes Frieren’s protégé since then, and slowly grows into one of the irreplaceable members of Frieren’s party. Fern is currently 19-20 years old and is unlocking her true potential in the story. Fern is a mage following the footsteps of her teacher, Frieren. While she started as a third-class mage, Fern soon climbed the ranks and became a First-Class mage after passing the exam with flying colours. She will continue to prove that she is master Frieren’s student.
Stark
Debut: Anime Episode 1, Manga Chapter 1 Age: 20 Race: Human Class: Warrior Role: Vanguard
There is another member of Frieren’s party who was trained by one of her previous party members. It is none other than Stark who falls into the same age bracket as Fern. Stark has a tragic backstory that made him the warrior he is today. He had to run away from his village on his brother’s command when demons attacked his village. That’s when he crossed paths with Eisen, one of the Hero Party members. This is the turning point in Stark’s life as he decides to overcome his fear and become a great warrior like his brother. Soon in the future, Stark encounters Frieren and Fern in a village he was guarding, and since then, he has also become a core member of Frieren’s party. Stark takes on the role of ‘Vanguard’ in the party.
Himmel
Debut: Anime Episode 1, Manga Chapter 1 Age: 26 (flashbacks), 76 (post timeskip) Race: Human Class: Hero Rank: Unknown
The epithet, ‘Himmel the Hero,’ tells you a lot about the hero who vanquished the Demon King with the help of his party members. The Frieren series begins with the death of Himmel in his old age, as he is designed as a posthumous character in the story. In every flashback, we slowly learned more about the hero, his adventures, and his good heart. Then we started to realise the indelible mark he left on our main character, Frieren, with his altruistic nature, as the series progressed. There is no Frieren without Himmel the Hero, and he truly lived up to his title in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.
Heiter
Debut: Anime Episode 1, Manga Chapter 1 Age: 100 Race: Human Class: Priest Rank: Bishop
Heiter was the fun priest who made the Hero’s party lively with his presence. He was a priest class, and if you are confused by this, think of him as a character from the Souls games who primarily wields holy magic. After his adventures with the Hero party came to an end, Heiter took on the role of a Bishop due to his faith in the Goddess of Creation. And that’s exactly when he ran into Fern, who was an orphan at that point in her life. He adopted her with open arms and continued to raise Fern as his own daughter until his death. But before he died, he made sure to let Frieren take care of Fern as her apprentice. Heiter was mentioned to be around 100 years old at the time of his death.
Eisen
Debut: Anime Episode 1, Manga Chapter 1 Age: 100+ years old Race: Dwarf Class: Warrior Role: Vanguard
Eisen is the dwarf who led from the frontline of the Hero party as his role was Vanguard. He also retired after defeating the Demon King. In the world of Frieren, dwarves are also blessed with a longer lifespan, but not equal to that of the elves. So, Eisen has also been around for a long time, i.e., 100+ years in the story. In one instance, Eisen ran into Stark, who was fleeing from his village. This fated meeting led to Eisen becoming Stark’s teacher. Although they stuck together for a while, they eventually fell out after an argument. Still, Eisen continues to remain alive to this day. So, we hope Stark reconciles with his master in the future.
Sein
Debut: Anime Episode 13, Manga Chapter 27 Age: Unknown Race: Human Class: Priest Rank: Unknown
The priest slot in Frieren’s Part has been open for a while, and the goatee priest, Sein, filled the position later. He is the second oldest in the group after Frieren, but his exact age remains unknown at the moment. Based on his appearance, we can estimate that he is either in his mid 20s or late 20s. Sein always dreamed of going on adventures with his friend, Gorilla. However, he had to reject his dream to stay by his brother’s side in his village. Now, Sein teams up with Frieren’s party to reunite with his friend, Gorilla, as he hasn’t returned to the village after three years, as he promised earlier.
Flamme
Debut: Anime Episode 4, Manga Chapter 7 Age: Unknown Race: Human Class: Mage Rank: Great Mage
The teacher responsible for Frieren’s growth is none other than the Great Mage, Flamme. She is not just one of the mages from the past, as she is regarded as the founder of human magic. Without Flamme, it is impossible to imagine the future of magic. She always wanted to live in a time where anyone could wield magic, but she passed away before that ever happened. Now, Flamme’s will is carried on by her student, Frieren.
Serie
Debut: Anime Episode 18, Manga Chapter 43 Age: Over 1500 years old Race: Elf Class: Mage Rank: Great Mage and Head of the Continental Magic Association
Not even Frieren is called ‘the living grimoire’, but it is Serie, an elf even older than our protagonist in the Frieren series. Serie has lived for over 1500 years and holds vast knowledge and expertise in magic, unlike anyone else. She is currently the head of the Continental Magic Association, and that is why we saw her as the final examiner of the mage exam. And she was also the one who took in Flamme and taught her everything about magic.
Ubel
Debut: Anime Episode 18, Manga Chapter 37 Age: Unknown Race: Human Class: Mage Rank: First Class
The Mage Exam arc introduced us to many new characters, but the one who stole the spotlight is Ubel. She was a third-class mage before, and this is her second time attending the First Class Mage Exam, as she got disqualified for killing a mage previously. So, this face alone introduced her as a terrifying mage who possessed the power to chop down anyone with her magic. Ubel’s age remains unclear at the moment, but her appearance suggests she might be in her early 20s. Despite initially coming across as a menacing character, this character reveals an empathetic layer, which is why she is a fan favourite among fans. Now she is a First Class mage, and you can look forward to meeting her once again.
Land
Debut: Anime Episode 19, Manga Chapter 39 Age: Unknown Race: Human Class: Mage Rank: First Class
Land is also one of the candidates we met during the First Class Mage Exam arc. There was something special about him based on his debut. He appears to be around the same age as Ubel, early 20s, but he entered the exam as a second-class mage, unlike the others. In the climax of this arc, it is revealed that Land has actually been using his clone to participate in the exam all this time. He was in his village the whole time and used his clone magic to create a perfect clone, which aced the exam. Serie appreciated the guts he had to pull off this trick, and he became a First Class Mage at the end of the arc.
Wirbel
Debut: Anime Episode 19, Manga Chapter 39 Age: 33-34 Race: Human Class: Mage Rank: First Class
A mage who stood out for his experience (other than Frieren, Denken, etc) was Wirbel. He is the mage who leads the Northern Magic Corps in the Far North in their battles against the demons. So, as expected, he passed the exam with Serie’s blessings and graduated to become a First Class Mage. Don’t be fooled by Wirbel’s looks; he isn’t a teenager as many would think at first. He is already in his 30s, about 33-34 years old in the current story. Frieren and her party members will run into Wirbel again in the ongoing Continued Northern Travels arc.
Denken
Debut: Anime Episode 18, Manga Chapter 37 Age: 78-79 Race: Human Class: Mage Rank: First Class
After Frieren, Denken is the oldest participant of the First Class Mage exam at age 77, and he becomes one by the end of the arc. As an old mage, Denken is wise in his decisions and holds a great knowledge of magic. Denken’s tragic backstory tugged at the heartstrings of fans, as he tried everything to save his wife but couldn’t in the end. His trip back to his hometown had the requirement of Denken being a First Class Mage. Thus, he attended the exam and became one after Serie gave him the green signal. The old man will once again become a major supporting character in the upcoming arcs.
Methode
Debut: Anime Episode 22, Manga Chapter 46 Age: Unknown Race: Human Class: Mage Rank: First Class
Methode is another participant of the First Class Mage exam as a second-class mage. She proved her worth with her hypnotic magic abilities during the second stage of the exam. Thus, she is one of the very few participants who clear the exams and become a First Class Mage at the end. Right after this arc, Methode will join hands with Frieren’s party once again during the extermination of demons in the Northern Plateau.
Lawine
Debut: Anime Episode 18, Manga Chapter 38 Age: Unknown Race: Human Class: Mage Rank: Third Class
Lawine comes from an elite family where she faces the pressure of becoming a great mage like her three brothers. She and her friend Kanne graduated from the Academy of Magic. As a third-class mage who specialises in ice magic, Lawine attempted the mage exam to become a First Class mage. Both of them joined with Frieren in the first exam. However, Lawine’s dream soon comes to an end after she exits using the golem in the second stage. Now, she is planning to wait three more years and prepare for the next First Class Mage exam.
Kanne
Debut: Anime Episode 18, Manga Chapter 38 Age: Unknown Race: Human Class: Mage Rank: First Class
Kanne isn’t from a rich family, yet she attended the same Magic Academy as Lawine. The two have been friends since they were kids. Despite her fears, Lawine’s words of encouragement made Kanne pursue her magical career. Kanne specialises in both flight and water manipulation magic. Although her friend failed the second stage, Kanne moved to the final stage. However, Serie was able to sense the fear she had for her quickly and immediately failed her. Kanne still has a lot to do to conquer her fears. So, Kanne, along with Lawine, promises to do better in the next First Class Mage exam in three years.
Hero of the South
Debut: Anime Episode TBD, Manga Chapter 63 Age: Unknown Race: Human Class: Hero Rank: Humanity’s Strongest Hero
Himmel isn’t the only hero this world has ever seen. Before him, it was the Hero of the South who was regarded as the strongest hero of humanity. He was a brave hero fighting against the ‘Seven Sages of Destruction’ sent by the Demon King and managed to kill three. Although he was mentioned earlier in the story, we will officially get to meet him in a flashback in Frieren Season 2. As you can see here, Frieren boasts a wide variety of characters. The new season is airing now, and we expect to meet more new faces. We will add them here to our list soon. Until then, who is your favourite character in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End?
